Dinner for Eight
[ Sign-up on our Registration Form ]

Even in Biblical times, people valued the special fellowship that came from sharing food together. For decades now, members of the St. Mark’s church family have gotten better acquainted by sharing food and fellowship, as well. At one point, it was through a program called Noah’s Supper Club. For awhile, it was simply called “the potluck groups.” And in more recent years, many participated in the program known as Fun, Food and Fellowship. In the fall of 2008, St. Mark's launched a "Dinner for Eight" program.

“Dinner for Eight” returns this fall, offering all of us a great way to make new friends and enjoy a good meal! We hope you’ll decide that it’s something you’d like to be part of!

There will be six dinners scheduled again this season: in October, November/December, January, February, March and April. You will be placed in a group of other couples or singles for each of the dinners. Participants will rotate, so you will be with different people each time, although due to numbers, you’ll also be with some people twice.

Each couple or single will host one meal (and some may host twice). You may plan a dinner, a brunch, a cook-out or whatever. The host will provide the main course, and the others will bring a salad, a dessert, or whatever is needed. (If hosting at your own home presents a problem, you might consider contacting the church office about using a room at St. Mark’s.)

You may sign up as a regular participant, or if you prefer, you may simply put your name on the substitute list. As part of the sub list, you might get a call from a hostess when someone in the group is unavailable, and if your schedule is free, you attend in their place.

A Note to Singles: You are welcome to participate in Dinner for Eight as an individual. Or, if you wish, two people can sign up as a duo…you’ll be scheduled together for each meal (and for hosting). Examples of duo’s might be two friends, two siblings, an adult child and parent, etc.

To participate in this year’s Dinner for Eight, simply click here. The registration deadline is Sunday, Aug. 28, 2011. Individuals can be added to the substitute list at any time during the year.

Things You May Be Wondering about “Dinner for Eight…”

Q: Do I need to be a member of St. Mark’s in order to participate?
A: No! If you’re reading this, you’re already part of the church family, so simply sign up!

Q: Are people grouped by age?
A: No, this is a cross-generational activity, which definitely helps us know more people in our church family. While the dinners are adult gatherings, young parents are certainly encouraged to participate and enjoy a “grown-ups night out!”

Q: I’m a winter resident who won’t be in Tucson for all of the dates. Does this mean I can’t participate?
A: Absolutely not! That’s one reason for the substitute list. Sign up now; it’s important for scheduling purposes to include you from the start. Just be sure to let your hosts know if you’ll be unavailable, so they can contact a sub.

Q: What if I’d like to be involved in more than six dinners?
A: Sign up as a regular AND a substitute. And, if a particular group gets together and really “clicks,” you can always make your own plans to get together again. This program is just a starting point; you’re always free to schedule additional gatherings!
