Christ the King Sunday

In the church year, this week is Christ the King Sunday. It’s the last Sunday before the new year starts, with Advent next week. On this Sunday, we are reminded that the crucified God who reconciles the world to himself is the same God who will come again in glory, and is the same God who will come as a humble infant in a manger. Our scripture and song celebrate this Christ who reigns over the world and our lives.

What does that look like in reality? We live in a unique time now where we will watch a new king crowned in England. I imagine it will be filled with pomp and circumstance, with parties and ceremonies, with crowds celebrating a new king. The new king will continue to live a life of luxury and opulence, a life of ruling over a kingdom he will struggle to truly understand because of his position of power and wealth, his fame and his fortune.

I give thanks that Christ the King isn’t like the monarch of Britain. Instead, Christ the King is the one who came from the thrones and banners, the clouds and angels, down to earth to walk with the hurting and lonely, the sick and the dying. Jesus the Christ offered hope and healing, offered wholeness and life to all he encountered as he walked on earth. And we know because of his suffering, death, and resurrection, Christ the King reigns exactly where you are, where the broken are, where the hurting and the hungry and forgotten are.

We celebrate this Sunday with worship, with song and scripture and prayers, that Christ is King. Jesus the Christ reigns. May you know the wholeness offered through this King. May you know the hope that this King offers. May your life reflect the reign of his Kingdom, on earth as it is in heaven.

See you soon.
