Honor

NOTE: This Sunday, May 30, we worship at 8 a.m. on the west patio for the last time – on Sunday, June 6, that service moves into the Sanctuary. Prerecorded worship continues at 9:45 a.m. And 10 a.m. worship on May 30 in the Sanctuary will continue for those who are registered.

Register for next week’s (June 6) 10 a.m. Sanctuary worship beginning at 8:30 a.m. TUESDAY, June 1, due to the Monday Memorial Day holiday. The 8 a.m. Sanctuary worship does not require registration. See details later in this message.

What does it mean to honor someone? This weekend we honor those who gave their lives in service to our country. Along with that, we continue our sermon series on Sunday with “Jesus and Love in the Ten Commandments,” focusing on “Honor your father and mother.” To honor means to show respect and care, to demonstrate that someone has significance in our lives.

Why did God give this commandment to “honor your father and mother”? Was it primarily to be sure that elders were cared and provided for? I think that’s an important reason but not the whole story. Honoring one’s parents has a larger purpose – to show one’s children how to live and to create a loving community that will go well into the future. That kind of honor is not just for now but for what memories we create that help guide us into a bright (or a dark) future. That’s what we’ll talk about in worship this Sunday.

As we go into the last month of my service as the Lead Pastor at St. Mark’s before I retire June 30, my heart continues to grow with gratitude – gratitude for each of you, for leaders and staff and for the privilege of serving with you in this great place. Always continue to do the work that Christ has called you to do – “Changing the world through Christ by caring for all people.”

Blessings,
Sharon
