Prophets

As a student at Florida Southern College, I was a Religion major. One of my favorite classes was Prophetic Thought. Dr. Johnson gave us an overview of the prophets and we walked through some of the books to read what they had in common and what message they had for us today.

Since then, the prophets have remained my favorite writings in the Bible. These prophets didn’t foretell the future, but they called the people to look to their past to see God at work, and to look forward with hope for what God would do in the future. They called the people to repentance and to return to the special relationship God desired to have with them. Today, the prophets remain important voices of Scripture as their messages give us glimpses of our current reality in their words.

I’ve chosen to focus this month on the lectionary texts from the prophets as we worship together. If you’ve not read them lately, I invite you to spend some time reading the prophets as you prepare for worship. This week we will meet Ezekiel, who has some strange visions from God for a people in exile. His invitation to hear God’s word remains our invitation today: How will you respond to God’s word? What is God calling YOU to do, and what is God calling St. Mark’s to do as we begin to reopen our campus?
