Reset Your Thinking

Have you thought about the opportunities around you every day?

Often, I get stuck on my “problems” or my “obstacles.” An unexpected bill. Another doctor’s appointment to squeeze in. An unending supply of emails. A writing deadline that comes Every Single Friday. All of these are problems I tackle, obstacles I overcome, tasks I accomplish.

What if I reframe these as opportunities? An unexpected bill is an opportunity for good stewardship and faithfulness with my resources. Another doctor’s appointment is an opportunity to discover new things about my body and how it’s responding to the world around me. The emails are opportunities to connect with someone. A writing deadline is an opportunity to convince you all I am wise. Okay, maybe that last one wasn’t offered seriously!

In our Scripture passage for Sunday, Jesus presents an opportunity to a few weary fishermen: fish on that side of the boat (Luke 5:1-11). They could have seen this as a problem: I’m tired and you think we are going to catch something we didn’t catch all night. They could have seen this as an obstacle: this man is standing between me and sleep. Instead, they responded, caught a million fish (it doesn’t actually tell us a number), and then fell to their knees before Jesus. Ultimately, they seized the opportunity to a new life – a life of catching people. Their obstacles and problems were clearly an opportunity to new blessings.

We have opportunities all around us. Sometimes, we need to reframe our thinking to seize that opportunity. Who knows – maybe saying yes will lead us to a radical blessing that overflows our life with abundance.

See you soon.
