How Big is God’s Love?

Think of big things. The Grand Canyon. Blue sky in Arizona. Ocean off San Diego.  Mountains. Think of other big things like a seven foot basketball player, a field of sunflowers, a huge dog or horse. Then there are things bigger than usual like an oversize maple leaf or stink bug or cup of coffee.  You get the idea.

Imagine all that and more and you will have only a fraction of a picture of the vastness of the love of God. God is not like Santa Claus who travels around the world in one night but is only in one place at any time. God’s love covers over everything, because God is love.

Last fall when I asked you to give input for this year’s worship theme What the Bible Really Says About… a couple of your questions asked, “Does God love people of other faiths?”  In other words does God love people who are Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist or a multitude of other faiths in the world. Because of what I said in the opening paragraphs the simple answer is, “well, yes, of course.  God’s love is bigger than we can imagine.”  Underneath the question are other questions like, “Does God approve of other faiths?  Can people of other faiths go to heaven?”  Some people even wonder whether God loves people other than United Methodist Christians, like Roman Catholics or Greek Orthodox Christians. I can’t promise you that we’ll deal with all these questions on Sunday, October 27, but we are going to consider the question about whether God loves those of other faiths.

This Saturday night, 10/26 is Trunk or Treat.  Decorate your car and give out candy to the “treaters” or bring your children or grandchildren for this enjoyable evening – potluck at 6 p.m., or just come for trunk or treat at 7 p.m. in the north parking lot.

I look forward to seeing you this weekend.

Blessings, Sharon
